Possible multi party conversation with different timings
template
sweet! :-)
I have learned great new ideas: Holder as an object within another holder; A new way to create different time-intervals. Thank You! It will be easier for most of us if you will add few words of explanation.
Very clever solution to "cartooning". The ability to do Cartoon balloons would help "lower the floor" and make it more fun for kids (at least my kids anyway they love drawing cartoon stories). It would be great to add a simple Cartoon say/think feature to Etoys such as a "Say" tile and "think" tile, that follows the morphs and resizes automatically based upon he amount/size of the text. Also, I had a very good laugh reading your cartoon, and don't take this the wrong way, but I don't think I will let you eat my face ;)
Avigail, the other one ("Conversaion") has one advanced "trick" but this one has quite a few of them including holders in a holder. So, depending on the readers expectation and experience, different explanation would serve better. Do you have any suggestions what it should say? (Or, can you remix this project with such descriptions?) Mr. Steve, the balance of Etoys being a productivity tool and Etoys being an education tool is a delicate one. Getting users to think about how one would change the conversation speed is a part of learning we would want the users to tinker about. (BTW, Anpanman is a 40 years old character and he does let others eat his face to save the world.)
Yoshiki, thanks for the comments on my comments So, the challenge is how to lower the floor, while: Balancing the productivity tool vs the educational tool (what do we do for them vs what do they do for themselves) Why not both (I can dream). It seems to me the challenge is in developing good problems and yes solving the timing problem is a good one. So you got me thinking, are there other problems that will require tinkering and develop the same skills, mental models, habits of mind. So I posted a remix of your project "Screen Play Take 2". The challenge will be to turn the projects into educational material that teachers will use to help kids. As good literature your project fits the bill. But we need other forms and support materials which help facilitate the kids constructing these ideas/mental models/Etoys projects on their own.
Mr. Steve, Making it possible to do "both" is a good goal, yes. If a script or a user object can be easily made to an item in Supplies or your personal Supplies then what we can do is: - a kid still have to make a feature (like "say") by himself at least once. - but once he does so, he can store it to his Supplies. - he could send it to other people, too. - the other users can use and also look inside it. For me a new project usually takes 3-5 business days to show up on Showcase, so I need to wait your remix (thank you!). As soon as it is available, I'll take a look at it.
Yoshiki, Yes re-use through storing in supplies is a good idea. Another thing that would be useful is to be able to "copy" a script into another morph. For the animated man (you'll see it when the project becomes public) I had to recreate the same basic script multiple times (yes I could have simply done it once then copied and re-drawn the object, but I can never think that far ahead and prefer to tinker one step at a time. I will think more on how to re-use things within Etoys and how we can teach that. In regards to the "For me a new project usually takes 3-5 business days to show up on Showcase" this is unacceptable and I think may drive some people away from posting to the site, especially kids who prefer instant gratification (not that, that is a good thing, but its reality).
I really like that it there's an option to change the pace of the conversation! I really like this idea for a the use of holders.
Clear, instructive, and funny. A really good example of use of "holders". Highly recommended!
